An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been introduced across Great Britain (GB) effective from 5pm on Wednesday 3rd November. The decision to introduce the AIPZ comes following further findings of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in different locations across GB and the increased risk to poultry from wild birds. The AIPZ places a legal requirement on all bird keepers in GB to follow strict biosecurity measures. This applies if you keep pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard or hobby flock.
HPAI H5N1 has now been confirmed in 2 further locations in GB. One on a premises near Wrexham, Wales and another at a mixed backyard flock in Angus, Scotland. 3k Protection (PZ) and 10k Surveillance Zones (SZ) have been put in place around the infected premises (IP) at both locations as a disease control measure.

To date, 15 wild birds across GB have tested positive for HPAI H5N1. The Republic of Ireland (RoI) also confirmed yesterday that a wild bird found in County Galway has tested positive for the same highly pathogenic strain. See DAFM press release below.

A further VRA is currently underway to determine the disease risk to the Northern Ireland (NI) poultry flock and the possible introduction of an AIPZ here in NI.
The recent positive finding of H5N1 in a wild bird in Republic of Ireland suggests that the disease may already be present in NI and it is more critical than ever that we protect our poultry industry and international trade.
Grateful if you can continue to encourage the use of DAERA’s Biosecurity Guidance and Biosecurity Checklist. As you are aware, excellent levels of biosecurity remain the most effective protection against an incursion of avian flu in NI particularly over this high risk winter period.
DAERA will continue to work closely with industry and counterparts in GB and RoI to determine the next steps.
